RIBA Council 2023 Elections

Elected by RIBA Members, RIBA Council acts as the representative body for the membership. Chaired by the RIBA President, it is responsible for collecting insight from the profession to guide the strategic direction of the organisation.


RIBA Vice-President Membership and RIBA Council elections

Notice is given under RIBA Election Rule 1 that the following elections will take place as set out below:

Vice-President Membership

Any RIBA Chartered Member is eligible to stand, and the successful candidates will serve a two-year term from 1 September 2023.

RIBA Council

Council Member seats – two seats

Any current RIBA Chartered Member can stand for one of the two seats available. Successful candidates will serve a three-year term from 1 September 2023.

Regional Council Member seats – 12 seats

Any current RIBA Chartered Member on the electoral register for one of the regions listed below can stand for one of the seats available in that region. The term of office will be three years from 1 September 2023.

  • RIBA London – six seats

  • RIBA South East – two seats

  • RIBA South West – one seat

  • RIBA Wessex – one seat

  • RIBA West Midlands – one seat

  • RIBA Scotland South – one seat

RIBA International Regional Council Member seats – four seats

Any current RIBA Chartered Member on the electoral register for one of the international regions listed below can stand for the seats available in that region. The term of office will be three years from 1 September 2023.

  • Europe (excluding the UK) – one seat

  • The Americas – one seat

  • Asia and Australasia – one seat

  • The Middle East and Africa – one seat

East Midlands Regional Council Member by-election - one seat

Any current RIBA Chartered Member on the electoral register in RIBA East Midlands region is eligible to stand for this seat. The term of office will be one year from 1 September 2023.

Associate Member by-election – two seats

Any current RIBA Associate Member (or eligible to be a RIBA Associate Member) may stand for the Associate Member seat. The term of office will be two years from 1 September 2023.

Nominations

Further information on candidates' eligibility and nomination requirements are set out in the RIBA election rules, guidance notes, and role Descriptions in the RIBA Elections document library.

Nominations will open at 9am (BST) on 1 May 2023 and close at 4pm (BST) on 18 May 2023. By that time, completed nominations must be received by the Returning Officer through the online nominations form as set out in the guidance notes.

We encourage you to submit your nomination form well before the deadline as late or incomplete nominations cannot be accepted.

Timetable for elections

In seats where there are more candidates than available seats, ballots will be held to the following timetable:

17 June 2023 - voting opens

28 June 2023 - voting closes

The RIBA Honorary Secretary will be the Returning Officer.

Online elections

The Royal Institute of British Architects has a commitment to sustainability and using resources effectively and efficiently. In line with this, the entire election process will be conducted online. Nominations can only be made electronically - through the RIBA elections portal. Please note that nominations by post are not possible in these elections.

Whether as a candidate or elector, participation in the elections will only be possible if a member has a registered email address with RIBA.

  • RIBA Members who wish to participate in the elections and have not yet registered an email address with RIBA are therefore asked to do so no later than 17 May 2023

  • RIBA Members who have recently changed their email address are asked to update their information no later than 17 May 2023
